Wolf Parade

At Mount Zoomer (Sub Pop)

Montreal's Wolf Parade refuses to release any singles from its second album. That's really not an industry-shattering decision, since an indie-rock band like Wolf Parade doesn't actually tear up the Top 40 chart. Still, the open-endedness leaves impressionable bloggers without a single song to praise or dismiss, whatever the case might be.

But it turns out to be a smart move, since At Mount Zoomer's not-quite-prog, not-quite-indie songs seamlessly flow as a single work, starting out on equal ground and then piecing together like a musical puzzle. Zoomer builds momentum from its very first tracks, changing time signatures and piling on reverb, before eventually peaking with middle-of-the-CD cuts "California Dreamer" and "The Grey Estates." It all culminates with the epic 11-minute closer "Kissing the Beehive," a mess of Modest Mouse-style distortion.
