7/7: Ingrid Newkirk of PETA speaks

Posted by Frank Lewis on Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 8:00 AM

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk is just as provocative as her organization’s publicity stunts. She once told USA Today, “We are not here to gather members, to please, to placate, to make friends. We’re here to hold the radical line.” She’s not above wishing economic downfall on businesses that take advantage of animals. And there is no end to justify the means: “Even if animal tests produced a cure for AIDS, we’d be against it,” she’s said. Newkirk will discuss and sign copies of her new book The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights at 6:30 p.m. at Joseph-Beth Booksellers (24519 Cedar Rd., Lyndhurst, 216.691.7000). It’s free. — Michael Gill
