7/7: Josh Ritter at the Beachland

Posted by Frank Lewis on Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Over the course of five records and an endless road of performances, singer-songwriter Josh Ritter has arrived at the future he once sounded so unsure of. His uncertainty has turned into confidence, and that confidence resulted in 2007’s The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, his most ambitious and wildly varied artistic statement. He sounds more self-assured than ever, both in person and on record. No longer a scared, soon-to-be college graduate, Ritter found his way by doing things his way. Give the album a listen and you’ll hear Ritter’s spirited, itchy nature come to life. There’s beauty and exhilaration on Conquests. Musically, it’s nearly the polar opposite — save for the wonderful songwriting — of the folk idiom that has informed most of Ritter’s catalog. Joe Pug opens at 8 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $15 advance, $17 day of show. — Kurt Hernon
