7/13: Atheist at Peabody's

Posted By on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 8:00 AM

These days, it seems like progressive and/or technical death-metal bands are overrunning the planet like meth-fueled cyborg roaches. But back in the early ’90s, hearing a band mix jazz chording with brutal thrash riffs and thunderous double-bass drumming was decidedly unexpected. Atheist and their friends in Cynic came roaring out of Florida, expanding the genre’s lyrical parameters beyond the Satanism and gore of Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and Morbid Angel, while demonstrating just how far out they could go instrumentally. The band’s reformed in the wake of expanded reissues of its three albums, and a rumor of a new studio release at summer’s end has old-school prog-thrash dorks almost unnaturally excited. This show represents a great chance to contrast old and new, as the oldsters are touring with up-and-comers the Faceless, Psyopus and the Agonist. Oh, and three-quarters of Atheist will open the show as Gnostic. It all starts at 7 p.m. at Peabody’s (2045 E. 21st St., 216.776.9999). Tickets: $15. — Phil Freeman
