7/17: Painesville Party in the Park

Posted By on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Painesville’s Party in the Park bills itself as Ohio’s largest free music festival. Who knows if that’s actually true, but the event provides a ton of value for the (no) money. It kicks off from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. today with a singer-songwriter showcase hosted by veteran Northeast Ohio folkie Alex Bevan, launching three full days of rock, blues, soul, funk, folk, jazz, reggae, country, bluegrass, rockabilly and various permutations thereof on three stages. Many of the 30-plus bands are top local acts like Mifuné, Cats on Holiday, Winslow, Lords of the Highway, the JiMiller Band, and Carlos Jones and the PLUS Band, who close the festival from 9:30-11 p.m. Sunday. But the festival’s also bringing in bands from out of state: Tonight from 10:30-midnight, there’ll be a headlining set by Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, a St. Louis-based jam-rock band headed by Greg Allman’s son; Chicago’s blues ska-rockers Deal’s Gone Bad play tomorrow; and Virginia-based folk duo Mercy Creek and Ann Arbor folk group the Ragbirds join Sunday’s lineup. And there are plenty of non-musical things scheduled to entertain those who aren’t into whatever’s onstage: kids’ activities, a car cruise-in and classic car show, a prettiest puppy parade, a chess match, a cornhole competition and appearances by Jungle Terry. The party takes place in Veterans’ Park in downtown Painesville and runs from 11 a.m.-midnight today, noon-midnight tomorrow and noon-11 p.m. Sunday.
