10/2: Wovenhand at Musica

Posted By on Thu, Oct 1, 2009 at 3:55 PM

David Eugene Edwards spent a dozen years leading 16 Horsepower before their dissolution in 2005. Known for his haunted Americana-inflected rock, Edwards’ lyrics and weathered croon imbued the band’s music with a shadowy theatrical spin — like age-old murder ballads given a forbidding Southern gothic twist. The grandson of a Nazarene preacher, Edwards brings grim religious undertones to his side project Wovenhand, which became his primary outlet after 16HP splintered. It’s evolved over the course of five studio albums and eight years from a solo endeavor to a four-piece band on last year’s Ten Stones. The music abandons 16HP’s folk predilections for a moody shamanistic blues-psych that swells and swoons dramatically, suggesting the Doors cornered by the Bad Seeds on the deteriorating stage of a once-grand concert hall. It’s the dark hallucinogenic entrance theme for the horsemen of the apocalypse, featuring epic grooves thundering across expansive soundscapes in pursuit of a spaghetti Western villain to deliver a vengeful reckoning. State Bird, Thrill Jockey and Whisper Signal open at 9 p.m. at Musica (51 E Market St. Akron, 330.374.1114). Tickets: $10. — Chris Parker
