10/23: Inherit the Wind at Cleveland Play House

Posted By on Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 2:57 PM

There was a time when Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee’s courtroom play Inherit the Wind portrayed a bygone era, when trials regarding the right to teach science seemed quaint. But that was then. Now we have a new breed of political extremism, global-warming deniers and museums trying to turn creation into science. This atmosphere makes 1926’s Scopes Monkey Trial seem pretty fresh. Seth Gordon directs a new production of Inherit the Wind about the trial, starring Ed Dixon as a William Jennings Bryan-like prosecutor. Scott Jaeck plays a defense attorney who’s a lot like Clarence Darrow, and Tom White is science teacher Bertram Cates (standing in for John Scopes). It opens at 8 p.m. at the Cleveland Play House’s Drury Theatre (8500 Euclid Ave., 216.795.7000) and runs through November 15. Tickets: $44-$51. — Michael Gill
