11/20: Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra

Cleveland Orchestra assistant conductor Tito Muñoz takes a stroll down the street from Severance Hall today to lead the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra in a program of well-known 20th-century works. Opening with Leonard Bernstein’s bright and busy Candide Overture, the show then moves on to soloist Elizabeth Breslin in the Bela Bartok Viola Concerto, one of the most familiar works for an instrument that rarely gets the solo spotlight. Finally, it all wraps up with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a portrait — depending on whom you ask — of either Russians living in terror under Stalin or the challenges and eventual triumph of modern man. Showtime is 8 p.m. at CIM’s Kulas Hall (11021 East Blvd., 216.791.5000). Admission is free, but a seating pass is required. — Michael Gill
