11/27: Ekoostik Hookah at Beachland

Posted By on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 12:24 PM

It might seem odd that an Ohio-based jam band would repeatedly be invited to perform in reggae-obsessed Jamaica. But after hearing Ekoostik Hookah’s psychedelic improv music, you’ll immediately get it. After all, the sound they make is a perfect complement to the inexpensive ganja you might sample during a visit to the small Caribbean nation. Formed in 1991 by singer-keyboardist Dave Katz, guitarist Steve Sweney, bassist Cliff Starbuck and singer-guitarist John Mullins (drummer Eric Lanese joined in ’93), Ekoostik Hookah have become one of the most beloved bands of the national jam-band scene. They set themselves apart with their carefully arranged three-part harmonies and a very open mind when it comes to music. You’ll hear a little bit of jazz, folk and experimental noodling in their annual Thanksgiving show, which starts at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Gypsy Relic open. Tickets: $20 advance, $22 day of show. — Ernest Barteldes
