Part of an international chain of teppanyaki restaurants, Benihana has long been a Cleveland fave for communal dining around hibachi tables, where knife-wielding chefs provide dinner and a show. Thanks to a lengthy remodeling, a sushi bar now joins the scene; while the sushi offerings aren't particularly imaginative, they are fresh and tasty.
Hibachi-table preparations of steak and seafood are the stars of this casual Japanese restaurant's menu, although the well-made sushi also earns its props. And a bucolic outdoor patio, overlooking a wooded ravine, is a warm-weather treat.
Having worked at famed Nobu, chef Dante Boccuzzi had lofty aspirations when creating Ginko, his subterranean sushi restaurant that sits below the chef's eponymous Dante. As a result, Ginko is a paean to fish, most of it raw, some of it rolled, all of it exceptional. Diners seated at one of the two booths can also enjoy shabu shabu, Japanese-style fondue. Beer, wine, and sake are available.
Ginza Sushi & Steak House
The little sushi bar that could now tosses a mean lobster tail and steak on the hibachi. Wash everything down with a thimble of sake or a cold Kirin. And save room for some green tea ice cream.
Fun and funky, downtown's only Japanese-style ramen house offers an array of noodle bowls ranging from the traditional to the contemporary. Creative sides and add-ons allow slurpers to customize their bowls in almost endless ways, while a tight selection of cold sake, beer, wine, and creative cocktails adds to the merriment.
Casual, comfortable and completely unpretentious, this popular Japanese restaurant serves some of the best sushi and sashimi in town, featuring quality ingredients, plenty of variety and wallet-friendly prices. An assortment of tempura, yakitori and teriyaki dishes serves as counterpoint.
A second, smaller outpost for this popular Cleveland Hts. restaurant, Pacific East offers some of the region’s freshest, most generously apportioned sushi, along with tempura, teriyaki, agemono, and noodle dishes.
Downtown’s best sushi is served in this hankie-sized spot, a showplace for pristine flavors, artful presentation, and generous portions. Beyond the usual unagi, spicy tuna, and rainbow rolls, the chefs whip up impressive vegetarian futomaki, just right for herbivores. The place is packed at midday, so reservations are recommended.
An excellent variety of maki and nigiri sushi is the star of the show here — ordered à la carte or in combinations as either appetizers or entrées. Beyond sushi, diners can also select items from a large menu of steaks, seafood, poultry, noodle, and vegetarian dishes. Charming servers in traditional kimonos add a decorative touch.
Part of a small regional chain with locations in Montrose and Canton, this splashy Japanese steakhouse boasts ocean blue accents, uptempo music and lighting, and mesmerizing water features. In addition to the good, filling and typical hibachi feasts, the menu offers a full line-up of sushi, tempura, noodle and teriyaki dishes.
