Mikey G's Picks of the Week

The Blood Brothers
This week's top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who's paid to pick them: Monday: Seattle's Blood Brothers make post-hardcore punk that really tears at their songs' melodic core. Their latest album, Young Machetes, pretty much lets the song titles fill you in: "Set Fire to the Face on Fire," "We Ride Skeletal Lightning," and "Nausea Shreds Yr Head." They play the Agora tonight. Tuesday: Dr. Dog's lo-fi, jam-band, harmony-filled retro rock leaves us at a loss for descriptive words. The Philly group's new album, We All Belong, combines Guided by Voices indie-pop, Beach Boys harmonies, and quite a bit of instrumental noodling. They were recently singled out by Rolling Stone as a band to watch this year. Check 'em out at the Beachland. Wednesday: Tonight's Robert Lockwood Jr. Tribute at Fat Fish Blue features Cleveland Fats and Lockwood's Allstar Band. The bluesman passed away last year. He would've been 92 today. Other local musicians (like Colin Dussault, Mr. Downchild, and Travis Haddix) also sing the blues at the bash. Thursday: The Oscar-nominated documentary Iraq in Fragments tells three stories about a country torn apart by war. Shot without narration and occasionally in the manic jump-cut style favored by gore-movie filmmakers, Iraq in Fragments puts a scarred face on a separated nation. It screens at the Cleveland Cinematheque tonight. Friday: According to director Andrew May, the Great Lakes Theater Festival's production of Shakespeares' swan song The Tempest looks an awful lot like our favorite TV show about stranded island-dwellers. "It's just like Lost," he says. "People from different walks of life are thrown together. There's a beast, romance, and a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat." The Tempest runs through April 20 at the Ohio Theatre. --Michael Gallucci
