A bad landlord takes a beating

Posted By on Tue, May 22, 2007 at 2:34 PM

Yesterday morning, Judge Patrick Carroll’s Lakewood courtroom was like a scene out of The Super. Only instead of Joe Pesci in the hot seat, it was Lakewood landlord Richard Naumann. Naumann owns four apartment buildings in the suburb, including Northview Apartments on Lake Avenue. Since before March, his tenants have been living without heat, hot water, or working stoves. That’s because Naumann has been dumping their rent checks into his stately Rocky River home rather than the gas bill. He currently owes the gas company $100,000. On Monday, Judge Carroll sentenced Naumann to live in Northview apartments – without heat, of course – until further notice. Naumann will be tracked by an electronic ankle bracelet to make sure he can’t leave. If he tries, Sheriff McFaul will be his new landlord, Carroll promised. After spending his first night in Third World conditions, Naumann reappeared in Carroll’s courtroom today, busted on a few more charges of failure to comply and littering for his neglect of other buildings on Robinwood and Madison. If he’s found guilty on all charges, he’ll go to prison for up six months. In the meantime, Naumann is being forced to deposit all the rent money into the court. -- Denise Grollmus
