The first Chipotle Mexican Grill (www.chipotle.com) within Cleveland city limits will soon open its doors in Steelyard Commons (3471 Steelyard Drive, at the intersection of I-71 and the Jennings Freeway). And since the socially conscious company can’t toss lettuce without turning it into a fundraiser, you can be sure that staffers have come up with good reasons for you to attend the grand opening
First, stop in between 5 and 8 p.m. during the July 26 grand opening, and you can save a few pesos by snagging a burrito, tacos, or a bol (salad), plus a soft drink, for only $5. And second, you can chow down secure in the knowledge that 100 percent of your money will go not to the corporate wonks, but to young people involved in The Urban Learning Garden
Located next to Lucky’s Café in Tremont, the Learning Garden provides a chance for youngsters to plan and manage a mini organic vegetable farm. Some of the produce they raise is sold at the new Tremont Farmers’ Market, held each Saturday morning at the corner of Starkweather and Professor. The rest is donated to CityFresh, where it lands on the tables of low-income Cleveland consumers.
Chipotle is joined in this fundraiser by members of the local chapter of Les Dames D’Escoffier (www.ldei.org), a group of northeast Ohio culinary professionals that includes food writers, culinary educators, and chefs. --- Elaine T. Cicora
