Dandi Wind's senior class picture. We think.
This weekend’s top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who’s paid to pick them: Friday: The British music press recently heralded neu-rave as the sound of summer. Dandi Wind , a Vancouver-based singer with a clipped goth accent and a bank of synths backing her, quickly became the nascent movement’s poster girl. Little surprise, since the siren-squealing sounds on her new album, Concrete Igloo, burrow into your skull with all the subtlety of a jackhammer. She plays a free show at the Mercury Lounge at midnight. Saturday: Collinwood’s Waterloo Arts Festival shows off its vibrant arts community -- which includes everyone from painters to poets. Dancers, performance artists, and live bands entertain on a stage in the middle of the action, while local merchants set up shop, selling ceramics, jewelry, and food. Plus, there’s the Beachland’s popular Rock & Roll Flea Market. Sunday: When hopeless romantic Charity Hope Valentine ends up in a lake after an ex steals her purse, she doesn’t get even. She busts loose with some jazz hands and sticks up for the guy in Sweet Charity, now playing at Blossom Music Center’s Porthouse Theatre. The musical -- originally staged by Bob Fosse in 1966 -- tells the story of a dancer in a seedy joint who remains optimistic, despite a lifetime of disappointment. Things begin to look up when a handsome man enters her life. -- Michael Gallucci
