Giving away music is the new selling music, and Okkervil River is all over the trend.
Keeping in the spirit of the season, Okkervil River – which released one of our favorite albums of 2007, The Stage Names -- is giving away a cool Golden Opportunities mixtape on its website. The nine-cut download includes live material from the past two years, including cover songs by Randy Newman (“Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear”), Joni Mitchell (“The Blonde in the Bleachers”), and Sandy Denny (“Solo”). Plus, Okkervil frontman Will Sheff contributes his own holiday offering, “Listening to Otis Redding at Home During Christmas” – a stripped-down slice of melancholia that we’re pretty sure It’s a Wonderful Life’s George Bailey would really dig.
