Living the Dream, One Pulled Hammy at a Time

Posted By on Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 6:32 AM

As the Jake -- ahem, Progessive Field -- screw that, it's the Jake -- lies cold and vacant, beaming its sterile logo out to drivers on Carnegie Avenue, 120 tribe fans made their way down to Winter Haven, Florida, over the weekend to test their base running prowess at fantasy camp. ... The campers, all 30 years old and up, will get their swings back in shape with help from former Tribe greats like Jim “Mudcat” Grant and Bob Feller. They’ll even squeeze their girth into authentic Cleveland Indian uniforms, and after they tear apart their quads trying to stretch a Texas Leaguer into a double, certified big-league professional trainers will be there to patch them back together. According to the Tribe, the camp raises money for Cleveland Indian Charities. (It costs $4500 to attend.) And while it’s easy, and probably pretty fun, to make fun of old men playing with the wild abandon of 12-year-old sandlot stars, living out some dream that should have died long ago, you kind of feel good for the old saps, as they finally get to live out that dream and rub elbows with their boyhood idols. Maybe you even feel a little jealous. And a tad frustrated that you don't have $4,500 lying around. Then again, there is the kid's college fund. And he has been slacking in school lately. And isn't this why you never told him about the fund in the first place? And ... Yeah. So. Anyway, for more information check out the Tribe's Fantasy Camp page. And start saving. -- Bradley Campbell
