A very strange moment with Jim Brown, Cleveland's misunderstood sociopath

Jim Brown: He has one strange martyr complex
Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown returned to his creaky soapbox recently, this time in an interview with ESPN.com for Black History Month. It’s an odd fit for Brown, who is definitely black, but whose sense of history – at least his own – has always felt a bit concussed… “Good people will always stand up for the right thing,” Brown said. Which is odd, considering that Brown was once accused of throwing a woman from a second-story balcony. About his love scene with Raquel Welch in 1969’s 100 Rifles, Brown said: “The director wanted me to be kind of brutish … I didn’t want that at all.” Which is strange, considering that Brown’s wife once accused him of threatening to snap her neck and detailed a long history of violence. “I wanted it to be a love scene, not a rape scene,” Brown went on. Which is weird, considering that Brown also was once accused of rape. Brown complained, as usual, about the Big Bad Government, which he reports wants to “to turn you into a neutral kind of a person … to degrade you to the point where nobody would listen to you.” Which is a tad peculiar, considering that Brown skated on the aforementioned accusations after the women backed out of testifying – degraded and neutralized, no doubt, by someone much meaner and badder than the government. And when ESPN.com’s reporter gushed over Brown’s Amer-I-Can program that preaches, oddly enough, non-violence, Brown complained that he’s had “no government support … It’s only through my tenacity that I’ve been able to succeed.” Which is weird, considering that the city of Cleveland just three years ago boasted about dumping "significant amounts of money" into helping Brown’s program, despite the very questionable ethic of letting a man prone to violence preach to kids about violence. But then again, Brown’s history has never been something that Cleveland – or Brown himself – has had trouble hurdling. – Joe P. Tone
