They Might Be Giants, at the Beachland tonight.
Up until a couple years ago, They Might Be Giants were this close to becoming one of those nostalgia acts that plays rib fests and chili cook-offs. Then the group hit on the idea of making music for children. It was a brilliant move, considering that many of its songs are kid-friendly and super-educational anyway. They Might Be Giants’ grown-up songs about atoms, particles, and numbers are smart, funny, and catchy – a perfect combo that can easily be applied to kids tunes. Then last year, the Giants’ two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell) hooked up with the Dust Brothers – the production duo responsible for two of the planet’s best-ever sampledelic records, Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique and Beck’s Odelay. The Dust Brothers helped spark The Else, They Might Be Giants’ best work in more than a decade. Live, the band still mines its extensive back catalog, so those of you into nostalgia acts won’t be disappointed. --Michael Gallucci They Might Be Giants perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, at the Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo Road. Tickets are $23 and $25, available by calling 216-382-1124. For a preview, listen to “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” below.
