The general consensus of professional television watchers was that Sunday night’s Oscar celebration was kind of boring — little more than another Mutual Admiration Society event. The one bright spot was folk-rockers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s performance of “Falling Slowly” from the movie Once – which was shot in three weeks on a $100,000 budget... Hansard broke out the actual guitar he’d used in the movie – so worn it had holes in the wood. Irglova ignored the glitzy formal Oscar mandate, wearing a elementary-schoolish frilly dress with a floppy bow. The cheers that erupted after the two won the Oscar for best original song seemed genuine – not the canned, polite applause that normally accompany a win. And we had to coo at their little backstage performance. “We should have them kiss,” Hansard told Irglova, referring to their two golden statues. “But they’re both guys,” she retorted. “It’s ok, we’re in Hollywood,” Hansard responded. Isn’t that cute? Now Clevelanders get to see this adorable couple perform their angsty love ballads. On May 11th, they’ll be playing the Allen Theatre at 7 p.m. Tickets are not yet available. – Rebecca Meiser
