If Rosati’s opens, can spring be far behind?

Forget about buzzards: For me, the most eagerly awaited sign of spring is the one that says “Open” outside Rosati’s Frozen Custard (95 E. Aurora Rd., 330-908-0889) in Northfield Center. According to owner Jim Rosati, that sign goes up on March 15 this year – a full month earlier than usual. Of course, the fact that he had to shovel snow out of the driveway to move in his equipment didn’t escape his attention. ... But hey, that’s just life in the Snowbelt. Besides, what true custard connoisseur would let a few snowflakes stand between her and a Higbee’s Chocolate Malt cone? Cool, creamy, and almost dense as butter, this old-fashioned, freshly made custard gets my vote as the best reason to blow a diet – regardless of the season. As it turns out, though, I’ll have to wait until Sunday March 16 to score that chocolate malted; opening day flavors are mint and Oreo. As is tradition, Rosati will be giving away small cones for the first few hours of opening-day operation. (Hours will be posted on the marquee. Click here for the full calendar of daily flavors.) In related custard news, Rosati’s Lakewood location will not be reopening this year. The five-year-old spot has been permanently shuttered, due mainly to lease complications. On the upside, though, look for a new Rosati’s Frozen Custard to open in Twinsburg in mid-April, inside the former Handel’s Ice Cream space (10735 Ravenna Rd.) If all goes according to plans, the new location will feature a drive-through window, and a slightly longer season than the Northfield Center spot. Not that westside custard cravers have anything to whine about. Rosati’s third location, at 26261 Lorain Rd. in North Olmsted, is open year ‘round. --- Elaine T.
