Hello, Cleveland: The Weekend Concert Calendar

Posted By on Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Plenty of big little-room shows this weekend, unless you want to drive to Dayton for the Taste of Chaos tour featuring Avenged Sevenfold. If not, stay in town for some crossover, Celtic rock, or your favorite hits from the ‘90s. Read on for the full schedule. --- DX Ferris FRIDAY, MARCH 7 Adrian Belew Trio/Saul Zonana: 8:30 p.m., $20. Beachland, 15711 Waterloo Rd., 216-383-1124. Guitar great Belew has played with everyone from Bowie to Zappa. JiMiller Band/Carlos Jones & the PLUS Band: 9 p.m., $7. Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Hts. Blvd., 216-321-5588. One of the most jammin’ nights of this young year from two of the city’s most Grateful players. Chris Knight/Brian Lisik: Tavern, 8 p.m., $14 ADV/$16 DOS. Beachland, 15711 Waterloo Rd., 216-383-1124. A son of the Rust Belt, Knight plays sophisticated Americana. M.O.D.: 7 p.m., $10 ADV/$12 DOS. Peabody's, 2083 E. 21st St., 216-776-9999, www.peabodys.com. Stormtroopers of Death frontman Billy Milano leads his other band through 20 years of politically incorrect anthems, including crunchy crossover from the new Red, White, and Screwed LP. Saw Doctors/Bearfoot: 7 p.m., $25. House of Blues, 308 Euclid Ave., 216-523-2583, www.hob.com/. Some of Ireland’s finest kick of the St. Pat’s season with fine Celtic rock. The Scintas: One show Friday, March 7: 8 p.m. Two shows Saturday, March 8: 7 and 9:30 p.m. One show Sunday, March 9: 7 p.m. Tangier Cabaret, 532 W. Market St., Akron, 800-TANGIER, www.thetangier.com. It’s a family-friend revue, Vegas-style, in the famous Tangier Cabaret. Sponge/Festur: 7 p.m., $12 (21+ only). Roc Bar, 1220 Old River Rd., Downtown/Flats/Warehouse District, 771-6655, MySpace.com/RocBarCleveland. You know Sponge - they sing that “World of human wreckage song,” which has a real title, but if we don’t know it after hearing it every day since 1994, we never will. Taste of Chaos: Avenged Sevenfold/Atreyu/Bullet for My Valentine/Blessthefall/Mucc/D'espairray/the Underneath: time and price TBA (Ticketmaster). Hara Arena, 1001 Shiloh Springs Road, Dayton, 800-766-6048. It’s a drive, but if you’re down for some melodic, rockin’ pop-metal, Taste of Chaos has all you can handle. SATURDAY, MARCH 8 Alex Bevan: $10 ADV/$12 DOS. The Kent Stage, 175 E. Main St., Kent, 330-677-5005. Often described as “The Jimmy Buffet of Northeast Ohio,” the feel-good troubador will bring a little taste of summer to Kent. Half Pint Jones: 9 p.m., $8. Wilbert's, 812 Huron Rd. E., 216-902-GOOD, www.wilbertsmusic.com. Fusion-funk-jazz from South Bend, Indiana; maybe they do a swingin’ version of “Victory”? KROCK of the 90s: Ten (Pearl Jam tribute)/Hungerstrike (Temple of the Dog tribute)/Nevermind (Nirvana tribute)/Truage (Tool)/American Idiots (Green Day): 7 p.m. House of Blues, 308 Euclid Ave., 216-523-2583, www.hob.com/. It’s a tribute-a-polooza grundge fest, like Woodstock 2004, sans the mud people. Bob Mould (full band): 9 p.m., $15 ADV/$16 DOS. Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Hts. Blvd., 216-321-5588. Playing with a full band, Mould rocks out songs from his entire career, including Husker Du tunes, Sugar favorites, and solo songs. The Ohio Sky/Red Giant/2nd Half/Ark Penninsula: 7 p.m., $8 ADV/$10 DOS. Peabody's, 2083 E. 21st St., 216-776-9999, www.peabodys.com. LaMafia Records showcase, in Peabody’s Complex. Peabody’s stage: Ohio Sky, 2nd Half, Psych E.R., Ark Peninsula, Midnight Pasenger, Philo, and more. Red Giant headlines the Pirate’s Cove. Rockstar: Carlicia, Ray Bones, A-One, and others. Silence of a Silhouette CD release, with Affiance, Arbors End, and the Critically Acclaimed: Ballroom, 7 p.m., $10. Agora, 5000 Euclid Ave. An odd combo, these Cleveland lads: guitar licks that are straight outta 80s metal, with sissified emo vocals. But they’re both pretty well done. (216)/Keratoma/King/Calo: $10 ADV/$12 DOS/+$3, under 21, 9 p.m. Jigsaw Saloon and Stage, 5324 State Rd., Parma, 216-351-3869, www.myspace.com/jigsawsaloon/. Killer, straightforward metal from Mushroomhead side-project (216). If you make it to the show, ask ‘em when the frickin’ album is due. Because it’s overdue, and what we’ve heard sounds great. Keratoma sounds a little like a combination of an ESP guitar, a keyboard, and a blowtorch. SUNDAY, MARCH 9 Sammy DeLeon, with the Jackie Warren Latin Jazz Quintet: 7 p.m., $10. Nighttown, 12387 Cedar Rd., Cleveland Hts., 216-795-0550, www.nighttowncleveland.com/. Two local jazz giants combine forces for night of Latin jazz that’s mucho caliente. Emerson Hart (of Tonic)/David McMillin: Cambridge Room, 9 p.m., $12. House of Blues, 308 Euclid Ave., 216-523-2583, www.hob.com/. The former Tonic frontman is still doing his thing, plugging songs from the new Cigarettes and Gasoline, which tells stories from his life growing up in New Jersey. Firestorm Pro Wrestling: 6 p.m., $15-$25. Peabody's, 2083 E. 21st St., 216-776-9999, www.peabodys.com. Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J headlines a rough-and-tumble night of wrasslin’ with a rock sensibility. Prediction for the evening: pain. The Piano Man (Billy Joel tribute): 7 p.m., $26.50. House of Blues, 308 Euclid Ave., 216-523-2583, www.hob.com/. This big band capably recreates a Billy Joel show, from “Piano Man” to “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” but without that whole stumbling-around-the-stage thing. Weedeater/Black Tusk/Rue: Jigsaw Saloon and Stage, 5324 State Rd., Parma, 216-351-3869, www.myspace.com/jigsawsaloon/. Stoner rawk that’ll grind your face off. All of 'em.
