Saviors of the broken, beaten, and damned.
We figure My Chemical Romance
’s latest tour is sort of a fuel-up before they head to the studio later this summer to begin work on the follow-up to their massively successful The Black Parade
. How exactly does one follow an ambitious concept record that combined themes of death, Queen-size riffs, and matching marching-band uniforms? By stripping down to a pop-punk core, of course ...
That probably explains why My Chem is playing smaller venues this time around. The initial legs of this tour – which has been going strong for more than a year now – hit arenas. It’s smaller theaters this time around – a move that’s as symbolic as it shrewd (shows, like tomorrow’s Agora one, quickly sold out).
Expect plenty of Black Parade
material as well as some new songs onstage. We’ll see whether the band keeps its promise of scaling back the last CD’s monster tunes. Then again, once they hit the studio, they may pile on the lofty themes and overstuffed arrangements all over again. --Michael Gallucci
My Chemical Romance performs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Agora Theater, 5000 Euclid Avenue. The show is sold out, but you might be able to score some tickets on craigslist. For a preview, listen to “Welcome to the Black Parade” below.
