Get paid to sing like crap at Time Warp's karaoke night

You have to admit that karaoke is so ’80s. Put a bunch of lyrics on a prompter, try to sing them on pitch, and act like you’re the rock star that you aren’t. But Time Warp owner Rob Rogers is tossing in an incentive to make his club’s karaoke sessions a little more palatable: Money. And lots of it. ... Every Tuesday night, house DJ Flash Gordon hosts a karaoke contest, with the winner scoring at least $400 at night’s end. And you don’t have to be the next Archuleta to pocket the cash. As long as you sing a couple lines from one of 2,000 songs loaded into the karaoke machine, Gordon will put your name in a box. If you’re in the bar when he draws your ticket at 2 a.m., the money is yours. “If you sing a song, it doesn’t matter if you’re good or not,” says Rogers. “If nobody’s here when he draws a name, we put another 50 bucks into the jackpot, and it goes to the next week.” Because last week’s winner vanished before the drawing, tonight’s jackpot stands at $450. And as recently as February, the prize swelled to nearly $1,000. “It gets people to sing, even if you’re afraid to,” says Rogers. “I would never sing karaoke in my life. But if I was here with friends and had to whisper a couple of words into the mic, then I’d do it.” The contest starts at 9 p.m. at the bar, 26261 Center Ridge Road in Westlake.
