Woodmere police and the joys of racism, porn, and shooting at hookers unveiled in federal court

Yolanda Broadie's not a big fan of white guys, but she doesn't seem to mind officers who shoot at hookers.
For weeks, Mayor Yolanda Broadie sat stone-faced in federal court as the Justice Department continued its prosecution of Woodmere Village for racial discrimination. As Scene reported six months ago, two Woodmere employees filed EEOC complaints alleging that they were fired because of their color, accusing the black mayor of discriminating against whites. Former police chief Lamont Lockhart testified against the mayor, contending her disciplinary practices were clearly racist. He offered Masai Brown as a prime example. In 1999, the black officer went to Cleveland to solicit hookers. As he drove away, he noticed that the woman had stolen his cell phone. Rather than simply report it missing, Brown, according to police reports, decided the best way to handle the situation was to drive back and shoot at the woman… Brown was also cited for watching online porn at work and for trying to pick up women at a local hotel. And just to put a cherry atop his rather blemished employment records, he was caught falsifying a report and trying to get another officer to lie for him. Lockhart twice recommended that Brown be fired. Instead, Broadie promoted him to detective, then sergeant. By contrast, Broadie fired white officers Tim Ellis and Amy Mengay for, among other things, the unauthorized removal of a light bulb for repair in a cruiser, and for a scratch on a cruiser that was another driver’s fault. And last month it was revealed in federal court that Brown – now a sergeant -- never actually quit his workplace porn habit. Former sergeant Dan Cisek said he had proof – in the form of spyware he had installed on his co-worker’s computer. When feds confiscated Brown’s computer, they found that the sergeant had indeed been quite busy at work, logging long hours on onlinebooty.com, where he posted pictures of himself, um, pleasing himself. And when he wasn’t doing that, he was working on his video game skills. Apparently, he was quite the master at Civilization and Grand Theft Auto. When Broadie initially heard the evidence, her face turned pale and she rushed out of the courtroom with her phone. Though this evidence was presented the first week of April, Brown is still employed full-time as a sergeant in Woodmere. In a weird side note, the Woodmere council will soon argue whether to kill mayoral term limits, allowing Broadie to run yet again. – Rebecca Meiser
