Mic Check: The Breeders at House of Blues on Tuesday

We’re still not sure how we feel about the BreedersMountain Battles. It’s a tough listen, especially since many of the songs lack any sort of melody. A lot of them don’t really seem to go anywhere. Still, it’s an intriguing listen – an alt-rock lullaby that sorta takes stock of the band’s last eight years. The band’s history is one filled with turbulence. Kim Deal originally formed the Dayton group while in the Pixies. After those post-punk heroes broke up in 1993, Kim recruited twin sister Kelley and a few pals and got serious about the Breeders. Later that year, they released Last Splash, which remains one of alt-rock’s milestones from the era ... In concert, the band looks back on the past 15 years and the three albums it released during that time. But those expecting “Cannonball”-style sonic assaults will be a bit disappointed in the relatively laid-back sounds on Mountain Battles. Still, it makes for good settling-in music that could very well light up onstage. --Michael Gallucci The Breeders perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at House of Blues, 308 Euclid Avenue. Tickets are $18.50, available by calling 216-523-2583. For a preview, listen to “Here No More” below.
