Times Shamrock Alternative Newsweekly Group Press Release Friday, June 21: Times-Shamrock Communications today announced the acquisition of the Cleveland Scene and the Cleveland Free Times, alternative newsweeklies separately owned by Village Voice Media and Times Publishing Co. of Erie, Pa., respectively. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. The deal is to close on June 25. The two alternative publications will continue to publish separately for their next three issues and then merge into a single newsweekly, the Scene, on July 23, according to Don Farley, publisher of the Alternative Group for Times-Shamrock Communications. Mr. Farley said that Matt Fabyan, publisher of the Free Times, will be publisher of the combined Scene newsweekly. "This is a great addition to our existing group of alternative newsweeklies," Mr. Farley said. "We look forward to serving the greater Cleveland community for many, many years." The Scene and Free Times each has won dozens of awards from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, the Cleveland Press Club and the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Times Publishing Co. has owned the Free Times since 2003. Village Voice Media, the nation's largest publisher of alternative weeklies, has owned the Scene since 1998. Scene will be Times-Shamrock's fifth alternative newsweekly. Times-Shamrock, which is wholly owned by the Lynett and Haggerty families of Scranton, Pa., also publishes alternative newspapers in Baltimore, Detroit, San Antonio and Orlando. Times-Shamrock also owns eight daily newspapers in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Virginia and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; community weekly newspapers in Northeastern Pennsylvania and Upstate New York; and radio stations in Scranton, Baltimore, Tulsa, Reno and Milwaukee. Village Voice Media Press Release June 20, 2008 For Immediate Release Contact: Andy Van De Voorde Executive Associate Editor Village Voice Media 303-293-3558 andy.vandevoorde (at) villagevoicemedia.com Village Voice Media announced today it is selling its award-winning weekly newspaper Cleveland Scene to Times-Shamrock Communications. Terms of the purchase agreement are not being disclosed; the deal is expected to close on June 25. VVM purchased Scene in 1998 and transformed it from a music paper to an alternative weekly offering in-depth investigative reporting and magazine style feature writing, along with authoritative music, film, food and arts coverage. Under VVM ownership, Scene has been named the best non-daily newspaper in Ohio multiple times by both the Cleveland Press Club and the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, and its writers and editors have received more than 100 national and state reporting awards. In 2004, the paper was named the top paper in its circulation class by the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards, a national competition in which it bested both dailies and weeklies across the country. VVM chief executive officer Jim Larkin lauded Scene's accomplishments over the past decade. "We more than achieved our journalistic goals in Cleveland," said Larkin. "This is a staff of remarkably talented and hard-working people. Unfortunately, after ten years, we weren't able to achieve our financial objectives." Times-Shamrock, based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, owns 17 radio stations and more than 30 newspapers, including its flagship Scranton Times-Tribune. It also owns six alternative weeklies, including the Baltimore City Paper, the Detroit Metro Times, the Orlando Weekly and the San Antonio Current. Village Voice Media is the nation's largest publisher of alternative weeklies; once the sale of Scene is complete, it will own fifteen papers, including the flagship Village Voice in New York City, the LA Weekly, Phoenix New Times, Miami New Times and Denver Westword.

This is the happiest day of my life. Hallelujiah, hallelujia, now I know your smugness. I'm praying like a motherfucker for my sole pick of who should be shitcanned. "Pretty please, O God of Abraham, Israel and all points west, I beseechest Thee, if a certain Village Voice editor is deprived of his livelihood, I'll unflinchingly listen to every cancer patient alive talk about their health for days on end while I flog myself with a spiked crucifix." My mouth doesn't water over food, but I'm having a salivary hemmorhage in anticipation of the creamily delicious prospect of reading the masthead of the new SCENE mutation. HAPPY DAY OF RECKONING, FUCKSTAINS!!!!!!!!!!!
Ummm... nobody really cares about this except disgruntled ex-employees that were fired for cause.
Excuse me, Bob "I think I'm funny" Abooey: Did you talk to "everybody" to determine that "nobody" cares about this? Because when you toss around terms such as "nobody really cares", you're effectively speaking on behalf of every living person on Earth. I really care about this, and that's all that matters. Nobody matters but me. Really. So, why don't you put your not-fully-thought-out opinions on ice, click on my name and go read my blog? P.S.: I'm not a disgruntled employee who was fired for cause, Femwad (I can just tell from the tone of your comment).
I thought the original and illustrated version of this post was much more appropriate. Damned new management.
What was "the original and illustrated version of this post"? I didn't see this pos until Sunday and there was already no accompanying graphic. I checked C-NOTES all day Friday and didn't see any new posts after the post about The Cure being in Cleveland. I guess everybody was too busy packing up their cubicles to execute the job duties that they're not going to get to do for very much longer. Was the illustration a game of Hangman where the answer was "Our Careers: R.I.P." with a sound file that played Taps? Shoulda been!
Wow. I was there when the Free Times was the Cleveland Edition, 21 years ago. I wrote a couple of music reviews for Scene and sold ads and bullshitted with Pam Arvidson, i.e. "Hambone" at the Edition. What a trip. Love Bill Gunlocke, Eric Broder, Roldo, John Ettore, the whole gang. The came with the REAL. Anyway, I hope it all works out. -Christopher King, J.D.
Michael Miller, you are an asshat. To wish that anyone's livelihood is taken away from them is a terrible thing, especially in this economy. I hope that employees from both papers are able to find employment where they can. Also, fuck the Cure!
Laugh it up, Mikey. Your boy has been gone for months now. All the Scene employees got jobs at other Village Voice papers, or they got fat severance checks, and they won't have to work any time soon. And when the dust settles at the new paper, you won't have a blog to play with, and they still won't hire you. She called you an asshat!
No blog to play with?! DAMN IT! Since you're Anonymous, so is your credibility. Therefore, I'm hard pressed to believe what you wrote. Even if it's true, (which it isn't), if the Village Voice crew got severence checks and other jobs: Fiddle-dee-dee, I say, more power to them. The new SCENE won't hire me? Feh! Then, I guess, I'm no worse off than I was before. It's probably going to be a corporate snoozer of an atmosphere, anyway. What makes them think they're going to survive as a print publication anymore than anyone else is? For that matter, what makes the Village Voice crew think they're not going to be the first to be laid off from their new jobs at other magazines when the shit hits the fan there? Do they really think they're gong to retire from those jobs at age 62 or 65 or whatever? If what you pulled out of your ass and typed up for l'il ole me was supposed to upset me, you'll have to do better than that, Mary. You have no power here. Begone... As for Dott Schneider, (I'm sorry, who?), she must be a presumptuous amateur or she could come up with better than "asshat".

What do you hope to accomplish by repeatedly calling me a name? And a newly coined one that isn't even that good. Are my feelings supposed to be hurt? What's the deal? The vast majority of people who read C-NOTES don't know me. So, I'm sure, they couldn't care less you and Dotty think I'm an "asshat". This has to be the boringest discussion thread ever. Why don't you at least click on my name, and use my personal e'mail to express your flaccid, impotent, anonymous hate speech? While you're at it, nut up and identify yourself.

Wrong again. I'm not the one having afit, pounding my keyboard, cutting-and-pasting, behaving like a comulsive mental-case. You may have the last word, since you seem upset about it.
