Cleveland In Top 15 Cities for Bedbug Infestations

You go, Cleveland. You're on top again. Or at least near the top, though you shouldn't be too thrilled about these rankings.

Joining three other Ohio cities — Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati — Cleveland is among the top 15 locales that is being bombarded with bedbug infestations according to rankings by Terminix.

Yummy.

With bedbugs in New York dominating the news (they seem to be everywhere in NY, from the Empire State Building to holding placards and protesting the mosque), you might have forgotten that plenty of other towns are being taken over by the little buggers.

How bad has the bedbug problem been in the Buckeye State?

Ohio officials asked the federal government for an exemption to use propoxur, a pesticide that was banned in the 1990s, to rid infested homes of the creatures.

The EPA wasn't exactly down with that idea, mainly because there are still lingering concerns about propoxur's potential health impacts on children, but Ohio isn't done asking for help.

According to Time:

Although the EPA rejected Ohio's propoxur plea in June, the agency has scheduled an Aug. 18 meeting with state and municipal leaders to try to formulate an abatement strategy everyone can live with. Among the meeting's participants: representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and, no joke, the Department of Defense. (Comment on this story.)

"We are hopeful that the outcome of this meeting provides a solution," says Ohio agriculture secretary Robert Boggs. "Quite frankly, something needs to happen, and it needs to happen quickly."

Sleep well, Clevelanders, and seriously... don't let the bedbugs bite.
