Mayfield PD: “No sandwich for you!” Update: “Sandwiches for you!”

After an unceremonious dismissal, Cleveland food truck Dim and Den Sum will return to Mayfield Village’s Progressive Insurance complex.

Thursday afternoon, the truck was making its regular stop at the Progressive parking lot, where owner-cook Chris Hodgson says he serves 150 people every week. Midway through lunch, Mayfield police arrived, told the truck it was in violation of the village’s solicitation law, and said it had to leave. Now.

“We had a line and everything,” says Hodgson. “[The customers] were pissed.”

Within hours, the truck’s Facebook page received 81 sympathetic comments. Fans also took their comment campaign to the police force, registering dozens of complaints. Friday morning, Hodgson woke to an e-mail from the police department, in which the force apologized and invited the truck back.

Chief Patrick Dearden told Scene the whole thing was a rookie mistake.

“Our young officer had a misinterpretation of our solicitation statute, which requires people selling in residential areas to register,” says Dearden. “He’s certainly able to sell his goods at Progressive as long as they want them on the property.”

Hodgson, who’s not hurting for business, promptly scheduled a new stop for next week, September 30. But he says he’ll be resume regular Thursday stops at Progressive October 7. — D.X. Ferris
