Saturday evening a man walked into a Jared Jewelry store in Copley and asked for "the largest diamond they had."
That might have been the first clue to the sales associate that something was amiss. No questions about clarity, cut, settings, or color. Nope. This guy just wanted the biggest rock Jared had.
You can probably guess what happened next, and this won't be in any of those "He went to Jared" commercials.
Yes, he grabbed the diamond, estimated at 3.95 carats and valued at $62,500, and ran out of the store.
David Moore from the Copley police force sums the robbery up nicely: "I would say that a person on this level, boldness-wise, was very bold."
You don't say.
The FBI said similar crimes have been committed in northeast Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Authorities are investigating whether a ring of people are involved in the jewelry heists. The thief in the Copley Township case is described man between 5'7 and 5'8 and weighing 160 pounds. His age is estimated between 25 and 30 years old. He wore a long, white sleeve dress shirt and had tattoos on the right side of his neck and on his left hand.
Anyone with information on the man is asked to call Summit County Crimestoppers at 330-434-COPS.
We're guessing the poor sales associate might get a lecture from his/her boss that may or may not include questioning the wisdom of handing over a 3.95-carat, $62,500 diamond to a random guy who walked in the store and asked for the "largest diamond they had."
Just sayin'.
