Traffic Camera Tickets Down; Chester Avenue Tops Citations

Clevelanders are either 1) Driving slower in general because of traffic cameras in various areas of the city, or 2) Driving slower at the spots where they know traffic cameras are located. One of the two is definitely true — we're going with the latter for obvious reasons — because violations fell for the third straight year, dropping 11% from 94,305 to 83,588 according to the PD.

Chester Avenue, the former International Speedway of the Near East Side, remains the thoroughfare with where most citations were given. The camera at Chester and E. 71st St. clicked the most times in 2010, resulting in 8,612 citations. Second and third place also went to cameras on Chester, which perhaps means you need a reminder that there are cameras at Chester and Euclid, Chester between 40th and 55th, and Chester and E. 71st. There, stop speeding in those spots. (Here's a list if you want to go over all the locations.)

Some fun facts from the PD report, which cites an ACS Public Safety Solutions study:

• Only one West Side camera — on Clifton Boulevard — ranked in the Top 10 for citations. The majority of the city's cameras shoot at targets east of the Cuyahoga River.

• Traffic cameras shot more than 255,000 photos last year, but only 32 percent of those images resulted in a reviewing police officer issuing a ticket. That's the lowest percentage reported over the past four years.

• The city collected an average of $21,700 per day off fees and fines from camera snapshots. Payments totaled more than $7.9 million overall.

• Sixty-two percent of violators paid their fines. The unpaid tab adds up to more than $5.6 million.
