With only a few exceptions, minor league baseball teams make their bones on promotions. Special foods, special nights, special guests. Especially when you crawl down the farm ladder to Single A.
Some of the promotional gimmicks are better than others, however. Take the Lake County Captains' "Salute to Cleveland Sports History Night," which won ESPN's Minor League Promotion of the Year in 2009.
The premise is simple: Cleveland has a long and bountiful sports history to pull from, and the Captains mine material rich and hilarious, reenacting some of the more notorious moments, correcting wrongs, and bringing in a horde of guests. This year's installment is Sunday night, and it's well worth your time.
The night will include Cleveland Sports history-themed on-field promotions, appearances and autograph sessions by Cleveland sports legends, and 10-cent beer being served for an hour prior to the game. Sports legends scheduled to appear include former Browns Coach Sam Rutigliano along with former Browns players Kevin Mack, Bob Golic, Felix Wright and Frank Stams. Cleveland State and now Miami Heat First Round Draft Pick Norris Cole, Cavaliers TV Voice Fred McCloud, former Cleveland Crunch goalie Otto Orf, Cleveland Buckeyes Negro League player Ted Toles Jr. and the Cleveland Crush Lingerie Football team will also be on hand.
The Captains will be wearing 1970's themed Cleveland Indians uniforms that night and fans can bid on the jerseys as part of a post-game jersey auction with proceeds benefiting Captains Charities.
