A couple months ago we updated your process servers with info on the efforts of one good government group to cut through the bullshit, venal and self-serving partisan pattycake that is congressional redistricting in these United States circa 2011. The Ohio Campaign for Accountable Redistricting is currently holding a contest to let interested individuals design their own congressional maps based not on their political predilections but reasonable factors like Red/Blue balance and county lines. And although the contest won't be over until September 11, the group has already been asked to submit a top scoring plan to the legislature.
Ohio lawmakers are tasked with reducing the number of Ohio congressional districts from 18 to 16 by the next election. The House State Government and Elections Committee held a meeting today on the topic, and committee chair Rep Matt Huffman asked the group to present a submission. The plan was cooked up by a Illinois state representative and physics professor. You can check out the plan as well as other submissions at www.drawthelineohio.org.
