New Seven Hills Mayor Attempting to Clean Up Bentkowski's Mess

George Clinton is my financial planner.
  • "George Clinton is my financial planner."

David Bentkowski, the Bizarre Boy Mayor of Seven Hills, resigned from his post two months early to take a job with the Ohio Lottery Commission, probably in the hopes they allow you to wear pajamas to work and he's got a Superman onesie he's been dying to break out.

He leaves Seven Hills with financial issues, many of which were the subject of a community news letter that earned his rancor and drove him to go amateur PI on the authors last month. Among the problems facing the tiny suburb: the recreation center, which has been a mini money pit.

Interim mayor Michael Barth, voted in unanimously by council, used to represent Ward 1 and was chairman of the council finance committee. In that capacity, he says he had asked Bentkowski multiple times for a business plan for the rec center, but Bentkowski never delivered, likely because his parents' printer was out of ink and he didn't know how to replace it.

Now, Barth says priority number one is getting the money plan right for the rec center, which the Sun News reports has spent "$320,000 more than it took in" this year.

Also last week, Barth asked the finance director to start planning for a balanced spending budget for 2012.

“I’m not going to let any grass grow under my feet,” he said. “Our financial situations dictate we operate as quickly as possible.”

Through August, the city had spent from its general fund about $565,000 more than it brought in.

To accomplish these goals, Barth will have to bypass Bentkowski's playbook for being mayor, which mainly included writing self-serving books and hop-scotching the country to take pictures with celebrities, neither of which did much to help Seven Hills' bottom line.
