A new gallery is joining the Gordon Square Arts District this weekend. Double Feature Gallery opens this Friday at 1392 West 65th Street. Specializing in works from emerging national artists, the gallery is a project of local artists and arts collaborators Rachel Hunt, Jared Frankel, Mike Marine, and Mickey Munroe.

The dual space contains a fine arts gallery and a craft shop.

Frankel and Marine have extensive backgrounds in retail and manage the visual component of the gallery, while Hunt and Marine manage the business related aspects. “We couldn’t do it without each other,” said Frankel. “We’re all good at different things.”

Before Double Feature, the friends had been involved with the not-for-project Ctownartparty, a pop-up concept that hosted events on rooftops, in gardens, and even inside warehouses. Although these events were a hit, “Ctownartparty was getting stagnant,” says Hunt. “It needed a permanent home, and now we have one — here in the gallery.”

The gallery’s first exhibition, opening tonight, features the illustrations of New York-based artist John Malta, who previously lived in East Cleveland. Also on display, works from Connecticut illustrator Joey Gantner and from Andy Hunt, a painter and Cleveland Institute of Art grad.

Malta has created illustrations for The New York Times and bands including The Jacuzzi Boys, The Black Lips, Pete Yorn, and The Avett Brothers. “My drawings and paintings are the result of years spent skateboarding till you can't see the road in front of you, wading through creeks, and loving the sheer fact of existing,” he says.

Hunt paints oversized canvases of surreal faces, and Ganter is an illustrator who specializes in comics and zines.

Tonight's festivities will also feature the new Cleveland-based electro-pop band Gossip Culture, a catchy three-piece band with disco-infused sounds. Also on hand: White Rims, aka DJ Daryl Dickenson, who will begin the night mixing electro pop with strong hip-hop influences.

The party runs from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Regular gallery hours are Tuesday to Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
