A liquor license snafu is prompting major changes at four-year-old Melange (2101 Richmond Rd., 216.378.9755, dinemelange.com), Andy Zelenkofske's Beachwood bistro. The restaurant no longer is open for dinner and will most likely close following Christmas for a major overhaul, explains the owner.
A lapsed license renewal means that the restaurant can no longer sell alcohol, at least for the time being. But Zelenkofske says that future plans may not require a liquor license anyhow.
"I actually started this process a while ago, but my search has been hastened by recent events," he says. "I am looking at a number of different formats. I was going to do something anyways as the restaurant was getting stale. In this business you have to stay out in front of everybody."
Potential concepts include more kid- and family-friendly dining options serving lighter bistro fare, baked goods, perhaps even a soda fountain in place of the bar.
"I don't see anything like that in the area," he notes.
Melange is still serving lunch and weekend brunches.
