Wronged artist or publicity hound? It’s always hard to tell in cases like these. But a New York-based performance artist/model/filmmaker who calls herself Bon Jane (real name: Rachel Brennecke) is claiming that she submitted a video treatment to Akron’s Black Keys last year which she says they really, really liked, but didn’t have the budget to produce. Now she’s saying that the video they made later that year for the song “Howlin’ for You” — which was nominated for Best Rock Video of the Year in the 2011 MTV Music Video Awards — is basically her idea, which she describes as “Tarantino/Lynch style Western,” featuring a femme fatale in bodices and feathered eyelashes going around killing men.
She wrote a letter challenging Black Keys Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney to a public discussion on the issues. So far, they haven’t responded.
So she’s fired off another salvo. According to her press release,
Bon Jane is releasing a short documentary on the subject of
appropriation and ethical collaboration within the arts, featuring interviews by
Gilles Bensimon, Mark Seliger, Derek Trucks, and other artists/directors, as
well as legal opinions on the subject of copyright and intellectual property.
The short film will be released on YouTube and varied digital platforms at 7 p.m.
on December 16th 2011.

It might be easier to take her claims seriously if the “art project” most prominently featured on her blog didn’t involve lots of polaroids of the attractive artist in her underwear flashing her breasts and striking soft porn poses or her website didn't feature a naked photo of her astride a white horse. Seems to us someone wants attention. — Anastasia Pantsios

nice sexist comment there... would you (Anastasia Pantsios) have made the same statement if Bon Jane was a man?
Absolutely. Any man that pranced around like an underwear model would be begging to not be take seriously either.
You can't take her seriously because she's naked on her website? It proves she's an exhibitionist not a liar.
It is a sure sign of things going well for a new group of artistists such as the Black Keys when naked ladies from NY claim they gave you your ideas, and then get all IP and legal--shmeegal with you. You know you have arrived. Thank you, Anastasia, for defending our local artists with your well written and supportive articles. Your recent work pertaining to Karamu House is fabulous.
I will bet the lady from NY will have many visitors to her naked web-site. This proves the point that no publicity is bad publicity when controversy is involved....well, unless you are Jerry Sandusky.
Have you ever noticed that days have themes which are often repeated in reality and foreshadowed in dreams the night before? Today the theme seems to be underwear for me. I dreamed I was walking around in my underwear and needing to pee. I am an old guy so I always need to pee in my dreams and my reality so that was nothing new. But then when I watched some news this morning I saw that Victoria's Secret was being investigated for using child labor in Africa to pick cotton for their many underwear products. And then I go to the computer to look at my favorite blog site--Scene--and bingo...a lady in NY in her underwear claiming to be the brains and ideas behind our new and rising stars, The Black Keys. Everything happens for reasons. It is only 10 am now so I will be keeping my eyes peeled for more underwear stuff.
The Black Keys are freaking awesome. If this "artist" claims they stole her ideas, then oh well. She sent them a video, essentially giving them permission to use it. Regardless.... Her ideas or not, the Black Keys keep hitting the right note in my book. I love them. Oh and it seems like every major musician has had these types of claims filed against them. Just seems like the next natural step for any musician.. Make it big.. get sued... get bigger...
