The name may not be the most inviting thing you've ever heard, but Rotten Meat Gallery promises to be a valuable new addition to the local art scene. The gallery at 1814 E. 40th Street, Suite 4B, opens this Friday, December 23, with a 6-11 p.m. reception for “Armed, and Fairly Well Equipped,” showcasing the photography of Akron photographer Keith Marlowe, now based in New York City.

The gallery is the brainchild of painter and Cleveland State grad Dan Miller and musician John Kalman.

“My roommate Dan always wanted to do a gallery,” says Kalman. “I said, 'Find a space and I'll do it with you,' so he did. He's not working right now so he did most of the work himself.”

Kalman describes the renovated space as “good-sized for a one-person show.” He says they want to do “all kinds of shows but focusing on Cleveland artists. We want to give younger artists a shot.”

“Armed, and Fairly Well Equipped” should give the gallery a strong start. Marlowe first got noticed here as a music photographer, shooting concerts for the Free Times. (Some may remember his passion for Norwegian punk-metal jokesters Turbonegro.) Soon he was photographing bands around the country, doing album covers and publishing work in magazines like Spin and Rolling Stone. He's broadened his scope to include photojournalism for Life.com. Among his assignments: photographing the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti two years ago. Like many photographers today, he's attracted to scenes of decay and ruin. His show at Rotten Meat will include both his music shots and photos of urban decay shot in places like Detroit.

Rotten Meat plans to run a standard gallery schedule of a show a month, with opening receptions and hours by appointment. They have three shows already booked for 2012; stay in touch with them at their Facebook page. — Anastasia Pantsios
