While pop singer Katy Perry licks her wounds from her impending divorce from actor Russell Brand vacationing in Hawaii, her parents booked a getaway to the chillier climes of Northeastern Ohio. Keith and Mary Hudson, evangelical pastors who work under the banner of Keith Hudson Ministries, are hosting “Prophetic Services” tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Church of the Rise in Westlake.
And no, they don’t shy away from identifying with their colorful daughter, known for somewhat risqué tunes like “I Kissed a Girl,” “Waking Up in Vegas,” and “Last Friday Night.” The bio on their website opens with “The parents of pop star Katy Perry, Keith and Mary have been ministering together for the past 31 years.” Church on the Rise’s website is promoting them as “Katy Perry’s parents” and running advertising on top 40 station Kiss 96.5 — which has Perry’s singles in heavy rotation — promising they’ll be bringing a message of “hope, joy and love beyond what this world has to offer.” That’s something their daughter could probably use a little of right now.
As for Katy, she’s frequently acknowledged that her name change was not to escape her gospel-singing past but to distinguish her from actress Kate Hudson. — Anastasia Pantsios
