New WCPN Show: Iraq You Like a Hurricane

Theyre German, so technically fair game.
  • They're German, so technically fair game.

If you tune in to local radio for its plentiful Eagles rock blocks and Browns draft debate, feel free to resume your regularly scheduled mind rot. But if you’re craving the latest international discourse on predator drones? You’ve got a new friend starting tonight.

Michael Scharf, a professor of law at Case Western Reserve and a former college DJ at Duke University, will blend his passions in a new program called Talking Foreign Policy, debuting at 8 p.m. on WCPN.

Scharf was struck by the dearth of radio programming devoted to topics like the unrest in Syria and Greece, those bastards in Iran, and pretty much everything else that happens outside the reach of 19 Action News.

So he pitched his idea to WCPN, and they bit on it. And so now the good professor is returning to his roots.

“Hosting is more difficult than I had imagined — keeping the flow of follow-up questions going, spreading them out evenly among the guests, and keeping an eye on the clock,” says Scharf.

While he does that, he’ll be joined by a panel of genuine expert pals who will fill the dead air with wisdom, among them:

* Shannon French, director of Case Western Reserve’s Inamori Center for Ethics and Excellence.

* Mike Newton, professor of law at Vanderbilt University and a noted military expert.

* Milena Sterio, law professor at Cleveland State and your best friend when bar trivia turns to international diplomacy.

* Paul Williams, president of the Public International Law and Policy Group, which throws a great taco night, by the way.

And lest you worry that this could make for soul-crushing daily discourse, take heart: Talking Foreign Policy for now is slated to air only quarterly, so as to ensure that Mike McInytre’s 64 weekly hours of programming are not compromised.
