Demetrios Atheneos, the opening chef of the popular Lakewood gastropub Deagan's Kitchen & Bar (14810 Detroit Ave., 216-767-5775), is no longer an employee of the restaurant, says owner Dan Deagan. The split occurred on Monday, July 2.
"We have parted ways," Deagan says. Until a replacement chef is hired, the solid crew of sous chefs will hold down the fort.
Atheneos, previously chef at Bodega, Bella Lucca and Giovanni’s, has certainly elevated his reputation while chef at Deagan's for the past two years. His ambitious, ingredient-driven cuisine reaches well beyond ubiquitous comfort food.
"It was time well spent, and we left on good terms," the chef says of the news. "I will take all the lessons learned, move forward, and do something even better."
Atheneos says that he's working on a new project in Cleveland, but the details have yet to be ironed out.
"It's and exciting time for me and my family," he notes. "This is a chance to be a chef-owner as opposed to being a working chef."
