On her first tour in more than five years, singer-songwriter Fiona Apple braved the blistering heat on Friday night to put on one of the most anticipated shows of the summer at Cain Park.

From the moment she skipped onto the stage, Apple had the audience completely captivated. The tiny, 34-year-old singer packed an enormous presence during her show. She was constantly in motion, both physically and musically, dancing her way through various transitions of jazz, rock, and soul.

While most of her best-known songs are intensely emotional and honest, she performed almost everything in her set with this intensity. She delivered each song with new-found depth, giving a performance that was emotionally loaded.

Apple took the devoted audience on a 90-plus-minute journey through her career, performing a set that included tracks from all four of her albums, including highlights "Fast As You Can," "Daredevil," and "Criminal."

She howled, screamed, and sang sweetly; she danced, swayed, laid down onstage.

And she poured her twisted heart out to the crowd, which generated more than a few marriage proposals from eager audience members. And then she left the stage the same way she entered it — skipping and smiling. —Julia Eberle
