Cavs, Grizzlies ink deal for Big Man Marreese Speights

NBA sources have confirmed on Twitter that the Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a trade. Big man Marreese Speights, streaky 3-point specialist Wayne Ellington, former Kansas standout point guard Josh Selby, and a second-round pick are coming to Cleveland for non-essential white center Jon Leuer.

Leuer was a stud in the D-league, snagging untold rebounds with the Canton Charge, but he's not a building block by any stretch. The Grizzlies are looking to save money as they finagle their way under abstruse NBA salary cap restrictions. They prize their cutthroat wing man Rudy Gay and this deal with the Cavs — a huge imbalance, talent-wise — gives them some wiggle room as they restructure their supporting cast in the coming offseason.

Given Anderson Varejao's season-ending blood clot, Speights should see significant minutes off the bench behind Tristan Thompson and Tyler Zeller, both of whom are incrementally coming into their own. Speights is a workhouse with top-tier efficiency. He'll contribute.

Ellington and Selby are question marks, but given the Cavs' backcourt inconsistencies, Byron Scott will likely try a number of configurations to see what works.
