John Kasich: No, I Don’t Really Care For This Gay Marriage Racket

The tidal shifts in favor of marriage equality across the U.S. have even wrangled a few tenacious conservatives this season, including, famously and locally, our own Sen. Rob Portman. That’s good news for purveyors of, you know, civil rights and all that.

But Gov. John Kasich’s heels are still entrenched in his plush Statehouse carpet.

“I really can’t see one, I mean, I talked to Rob and encouraged him,” he said when asked if there would be a situation that would make him change his mind. He referred briefly to Portman’s own recent change of heart. “If people want to have civil unions and have some way to transfer their resources, I’m for that. I don’t support gay marriage.”

And then: “I just think marriage is between a man and a woman, but if you want to have a civil union that’s fine with me.”

Civil unions are, of course, a) banned under the Ohio constitution per a 2004 vote and b) softball cop-outs for legislators. In Ohio, a petition is circulating to get a popular referendum in favor of marriage equality placed on the November ballot. Nonetheless, Kasich walked his comments and the rest of his social attitudes right back into the early-1950s woodshed where he and his kind feel most comfortable.

The Portman turnaround is certainly far more significant in the broad scope of things, but Kasich’s 180 shows just how deeply rooted such opposition to historical trends remains.

Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols would go on to underscore that the governor is “opposed to discrimination against any Ohioan.” He added that the guvnah may have dallied with the “civil union” terminology a bit too... “loosely.”

Whoa there! Don’t want to rush too fast out of your puritanical wonderland!

Ladies and gents: John Kasich!
