Since Sarava unexpectedly closed back in March, there has been no shortage of interest in the attractive Shaker Square space. After all the dust finally settled, it was a nearby neighbor that ultimately claimed the space.
Zanzibar Soul Fusion will be moving from their current location on the Square, where they have been running for two and a half years, into the old Sarava space. The move will double Zanzibar's square-footage and add 100 seats inside and another 100 seats on the patio.
To GM Akin Affrica, the opportunity could not have been more ideal.
"If you think about it, the Sarava space looks more like a Zanzibar restaurant than our Zanzibar because Brazil is highly influenced by Western African cultures," he explains.
With the new space comes a few menu tweaks. A full-service Saturday brunch will be added to the weekend mix, along with the currently running Sunday brunch. New menu items also will be introduced.
To make sure the staff is up to the task, Affrica has brought in a training manager to beef up service.
"Our new mission is bigger restaurant, better service, and bolder menu."
The existing Zanzibar will close its doors Sunday June 2, and the new Zanzibar will open June 3.
Zanzibar is part of the Soul Republic United Restaurants Group, which also includes Jezebel's Bayou and StoneTown.
