Dan Chaon, Other Literary Celebs Reading at CSU This Week

The mad-acclaimed Cleveland author and Oberlin college creative writing prof Dan Chaon will be reading this week at Cleveland State University as part its annual Imagination Writers' Conference. Chaon will be joined on Saturday by the cartoonist and writer Lynda Barry, whose graphic novels have a sort of Simpsons-cum-Beatrix-Potter vibe.

But you don't have to wait until Saturday to satisfy your "live literature" Jones.

Tonight, poet Monica Ferrell and fiction writer John McNally take the stage. Tomorrow night, essayist Elizabeth Kadetsky will read with poet Michael Dumanis, who directed the CSU Poetry Center from 2007-2012. Dumanis is an incredible reader, even for those of you who may not be into this sort of thing ordinarily. His energy and roller-coaster cadence make for a transfixing — if not always immediately accessible — listening experience.

The New York Times made Hannah Tinti's The Good Thief a notable book of the year in 2008. Tinti will read with fiction writer Imad Rahman (who also directs the conference) on Friday evening.

All readings will take place in the CSU Main Classroom Auditorium and will begin at 7 p.m. Literary events have this terrible habit of starting 15 or 20 minutes late, and that's never more true than at CSU, but books will be available for signing and there will likely be refreshments (at least after the closing reading on Saturday).

Make sure you bring your flannel and Moleskin so you look legit in the crowd.
