A Lorain County man has been selected by Google to test out the long-awaited Google Glass.

Ed Skimin, co-founder of Avon Lake's Emerge Incorporated, is one of 8,000 nationwide winners of the Google Glass Explorer Program competition, "If I had Glass," which seeks to give tech-savvy individuals the chance to try out the latest hands-free device.

Contestants were asked to write up a 50-word-or-less post on Twitter or Google+ with the handle #ifihadglass detailing what they would do with their device. Skimin said he would enhance the experience of his customers at Emerge.

Google Glass, a wearable computer system that is placed right in front of your eyes like spectacles, is described by Google as the new must-have technology for people on the go. Unlike other devices that have come out up to this point, GG is a camera, display, touchpad, battery, and more all in one.

Skimin and other contest winners were flown out to Google's New York City headquarters earlier this month where they were given both their Google Glass Explorer Edition and training on how to use the new device. Despite winning the competition, each participant had to fork over $1,500 for the, erhm, privilege of trying out the new system ahead of its 2014 release.

Skimin told The Lorain Morning Journal that he is excited to test it out. ā€œIā€™m confident that wearable computers are the future. It is a great opportunity to experience the next wave of how internet technology will enhance our lives.ā€
