Lakewood's Parking Revolution: Pay by Credit Card

In an effort to increase convenience for cashless, on-the-go motorists, Lakewood has proposed a new parking payment structure with hourly rates purchase-able buy credit card at kiosks, Sun News reports.

Right now, you only get 15 minutes free in the lots behind Geiger's and First Federal on Detroit. Under the proposed plan, the first 30 minutes would be free; the cost thereafter would be $1 per hour for up to four hours.

Mayor Mike Summers reminded folks that you can get a lot done in 30 minutes — "15 was pretty tight," he told Sun — and likened the changes to the parking set-up in places like Cleveland Heights or Crocker Park, the home of respite, family fun and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Summers said that officials are looking at other lots in Lakewood — mainly on Madison — for similar upgrades. Lakewood was evidently designed with street cars in mind. Now, as many as 35,000 cars at a time are on the streets.

The current Detroit project would be completed, including kiosk installation, in August or September.
