Who isn't scared of the dentist? They have weird devices that are loud and make our mouths hurt. While this sort of fear may be somewhat childish, a Northeast Ohio practitioner has given us a real, grown-up reason to be afraid.

Dr. Corey J. Schmidt, DDS, has been sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to charges of trafficking offenses for illegally writing prescriptions for people who were not formally his patients.

19 Action News reported that Schmidt wrote prescriptions in exchange for money, cocaine and sex. Schmidt was fired from Refresh Dental on Center Ridge Road in Westlake in June 2012 for poor performance, attendance and substance abuse.

According to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's office, the Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine graduate illegally wrote prescriptions for Schedule II and III drugs including oxycodone and hydrocodone between March 10 2011 and Oct. 28, 2012.  An investigation by the Westshore Enforcement Bureau and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation revealed that Schmidt was practicing without a DEA license from 2010 through 2011.

The dentist's ruse was uncovered when a call to the phone number on a script that had been taken to a CVS store in North Ridgeville revealed that Schmidt no longer worked at the practice that was listed, and a pharmacist filed a complaint.

Schmidt was ordered by Cuyahoga Common Pleas Court Judge Peter Corrigan to pay $2,500 in restitution, and must perform 60 hours of community service. If Schmidt violates his intensive supervision, he will be sent to prison for seven years. The additional charges of insurance fraud and theft were dropped.

Looks like Schmidt won't have a reason to smile for a while.
