County Prosecutor Seeks Death Penalty for Gloria Pointer's Suspected Murderer

Gloria Pointer's sudden disappearance and murder on Dec. 6, 1984, shocked the community around her East 114th Street neighborhood and forever changed her mother, Yvonne, who now advocates for families whose lives have been turned upside down by violence. Much like the murders of three women in East Cleveland this past summer, the death of Gloria galvanized those around her, all of whom sought answers.

Nearly two decades later, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty has filed a superseding indictment against Hernandez Warren, the man arrested earlier this year for Gloria's kidnapping, rape and murder. Hernandez may now face the death penalty.

"This man dragged a little girl on her way to school off the street and into a back alley. Then he raped her, threw her down a fire escape and executed her by beating her to death with a steel bar,'' McGinty says. "This unsolved case haunted our community for three decades and begs for justice."

Earlier this year, Yvonne credited her faith with allowing her to help families in similarly tragic situations: "I'm not a superhero. We can all do what I do. It takes all of us. What if everyone said, 'This is not going to happen on my street?' I don't know a lot about most of the stuff that I do, but I know you have to do something. You do it based on faith."
