It’s been just shy of three years since Jake Orosz took over ownership of The Fairmount (2448 Fairmount Blvd., 216-229-9463) near the intersection of Cedar and Fairmount roads in Cleveland Heights, and throughout it all he’s been making incremental improvements to the beer, wine, craft cocktails and food. Screw that, he says. It’s time for a major overhaul.
“It’s something that maybe wasn’t apparent to my guests but was really apparent to me that the space needed some updating,” says Orosz.
Already guests can see a lush new indoor grow room flush with herbs, built into an interior wall.
“It’s nice to be able to have fresh herbs to cook with year round,” he says.
Since taking over an adjacent space in the building, Orosz was able to rip out the small, makeshift kitchen that had served the bar since Day One (except during summer, when the party — and kitchen — move outdoors to the roomy back patio). That newfound square footage allowed Orosz to extend the bar, install more draft lines, and add much-needed seating, especially for the busy winter weekend crowds.
A new kitchen and hood system next door has allowed The Fairmount to up the offerings from simple “wine bar food” to more substantial tavern fare. Pulled pork tacos, Tom’s Foolery Applejack-glazed turkey ribs, and banh mi sandwiches now join the already popular flatbreads, bruschetta and sandwiches.
New flooring — ceramic wood-look tile — is being laid throughout the space, the gas fireplace is getting a facelift, and new wrapping on the interior columns will serve as finishing touches. The Fairmount is staying open throughout the improvements, says Orosz, admitting that it does get a little tricky at times. All of the work should be completed by mid September.
